When I realized the busses were going to a shelter downtown, I told Warren where to come and get me. I also told him to bring some clothes of his for me to wear, it was late spring, but it was really cold at night still. I got off the bus and went inside. I had to fill out my name, and information on where they could reach me. Then I sat outside wrapped in my blanket. I couldn't wait for Warren to get there. Finaly I saw his car pull up, and I ran and jumped in the front seat. "Whoa." He said. "It's cold outside." I told him. He laughed, and reached in the backseat then handed me a pair of his dickies, a hoodie, and a belt. "Thanks." I said. "I brought some socks too." He told me. "They are clean, don't worry." He said, and I laughed. "Do you need to go back to sleep, or would like to get some soup or coffee or something?" He asked. "Waffle House." I said, and he laughed. I pulled his pants on, and then slid the hoodie over my tank top. It felt so good to have clothes on! I looked in the back and spotted the socks he brought. "these are plaid." I said, holding them up. "And?" He asked. "Nothing." I said, laughing while I put them on my feet. I dug in my purse and found my brush so I could brush my hair. It was a mess from sleeping. Then I found my compact and put some powder on. "Much better." I said, and sighed. "You had a rough night. Poor Lola." Warren said. "Yeah. I hope my apartment doesn't burn down." I said. "I'm sure it's fine." He told me. He pulled into the parking lot, and got out. I put his belt on, and then we walked inside. "I grabbed my smallest clothes, and they are still to big on you." He said, laughing. "Shut up! They aren't too bad." I said. I giggled, and was amazed at how fast he already started to cheer me up. We went in and sat down at the counter. I got some hashbrowns with cheese, green peppers, and onions on top, and Warren ordered a full waffle breakfast. "GEEZE! It's 2am,and you are eating all that?" I asked him. "Fuck yeah! That's all your eating?" He asked me. "Uh, yeah!" I said. The waitress looked half asleep, and Warren kept making fun of her. "Shut up!" I told him after she poured our coffee. He started laughing, and then I started laughing. When we were done he drove me back to his place. I curled up in his bed with him and we fell asleep. I woke up to my phone ringing the next morning. "Hello?" I answered. "Hi, Laura. It's Bill, the lanlord." Bill said. "Oh right! When can I come back home?" I asked him. "Um...About that." He said, sounding grave. "What?" I asked, worried. "The firefighters had it just about under control last night when the wind picked up. The whole building is gone." He said. "What? But my apartment was fine-" "Not anymore. No ones is." He said. "But-all my stuff." I said. "The fire department is asking that no one come to go through what is left of their belingings. The building is pretty unstable." He said. "So what do I do? I mean, what if I have some salvagable stuff?" I asked. "Laura, let me be honest with you. Your section of the building got hit hard with the second wave of the fire. There is nothing left." He said. "Oh my god." I said, starting to cry. Warren sat up, and put his hand on my shoulder. "Did everyone make it out?" I asked. "I don't know that yet." He said. "Okay. Thanks for calling." I told him. "Yeah." He said. I wondered how many calls he had to make. I felt sorry for him. I hung up and looked at Warren. "Everything is gone!" I said, and started crying again.
