Chapter Seventy-Seven

"Chris." My Mom said smiling when she opened the door. She gave him a hug. She grabbed her purse.
"Hi, sweetheart. How are you doing?" She said hugging me.
"Hi there." My Dad said walking out of the house. He locked the door.
"We thought it would be fun to go to The lost Dutchman Mine." Dad said. They both rushed to the minivan.
"What?" I asked.
My Dad looked at his watch. "We've got ten minutes to get there before the tour." He said. "Come on."
"I don't want to go on a fucking ghost tour." I whispered to Chris.
"Yeah, yeah. Me neither." He said.
"Come on. We're gonna miss it." Mom said getting in the car. Chris grabbed my arm and walked me to the van. We both hopped into the back and he shut the door quickly as my Dad backed out of the driveway.
"I thought we were just hanging out at the house. I am not dressed to be hiking mountains." I said irritated.
"Oh dear, you look fine." Mom said.
"I'm not worried about how I look. I know I LOOK fine." I said. "But I am wearing platforms, long jeans and a blouse."
"You'll be fine." Dad said.
"I'll wait in the car while you guys go." I said.
"Don't be silly." Mom said.
"I'm not hiking and that's final." I said.
Dad squeeled the tires as he made a U-turn. He spead down the street heading back to the house.
"Now you've upset your father." Mom said.
I rolled my eyes. We pulled back up at the house. Dad got out slamming the car door. We all went back inside. "Chris, would you like to help me cut tomatos?" Mom said.
"Yeah, sure." He said. He got up and started helping her.
"Mind taking the trash out?" Mom asked looking at me.
"Yes, I do mind." I said. I got up and went to the living room. I turned on the TV. Dad walked in from the back yard. "I've got the grill going." He said. "Feet off the coffee table." He told me.
"Well, I've already been reminded of why I moved out of this place!" I shouted hoping they all heard me.
"Your life is what you make of it." Mom said.
"You're very right." I heard Chris say.
"Sucking up to the parents as always." I said. I went out back to the small barn. My favorite chick, Sunny was still in there. It made me smile. I took her out of her little cage and sat down on the haystack. I sent her down on my lap. "You know, you've really got the life. No worries, no nothing." I said petting her on the head. "I'm so glad I never turned into too much of a country girl." I said looking around the barn. "My Mom is still crazy. I don't want to be anything like her."
I put Sunny back in her cage and went out to see Buffy, my Mom's horse. She was brown and so beautiful. "Hey, Buffers." I said petting her.
"Give her some water!" I heard my Dad shout.
"I can't!" I shouted back.
"Why not?" He asked. He walked over to me.
"Pa, look how I'm dressed." I said.
He nodded and walked over to the water hose. He filled up Buffy's big water container, then sprinkled some water onto her. We always did that when it was hot out.
"What do you say we give her a bath?" Dad said. "I'll get you something of your Mothers to wear. Chris can take over the grill."
I giggled. I always loved helping my Dad give Buffy a bath. I loved to play in the mud that all the water made and my Dad and I would get in a water fight every time. I nodded smiling and ran into the house.
"Ma, we're giving Buffy a bath." I said. "I'm gonna borrow some clothes." I felt like a kid again and it made me laugh.
